Student Ambassadors

Unite Foundation Student Ambassadors are current UK students or recent graduates with lived experience of why a #HomeAtUniversity matters.

Our Ambassadors support Unite Foundation’s mission by contributing to events, panels, policy conversations, media and written pieces, helping universities, policymakers and partners understand why a #HomeAtUniversity is essential for student success.

Each Ambassador takes part in advocacy and public speaking training and is supported to contribute in ways that feel right for them.

Meet our Student Ambassadors

Kenny – Hi! My name is Kenny and I’m a 2nd year Economics student at Edinburgh Uni. As an ambassador for the Unite Foundation I’m looking forward to advocating for Care-Experienced and Estranged students to have a “Home at University” as well as helping to shape policy discussion around these groups.

Ikra – Hi, I’m Ikra Shabbir. I am a Sociology PhD Researcher at the University of Huddersfield. Currently, my research is exploring the support available for estranged South Asian women students in higher education. As an ambassador for the Unite Foundation, I am highly passionate about making a change in policy and widening participation

Nisha – Hi, I’m Nisha. I’m currently studying Archaeology-Palaeoecology and Geography at Queens in Northern Ireland. I’m working as a Student Ambassador with the Unite Foundation because I’m passionate about equity for care experienced and estranged students in higher education.

Emily – My name is Emily and I’m estranged. I’m proud to be a Unite Foundation ambassador and scholar while currently studying Medicine at Imperial College London. Since 2023, I have taken an active role in building community and advocating for estranged and care-experienced students, particularly in London. Ensuring we all have a home at university is vital to our success at university and beyond and will be a major step in closing the privilege gap that we face.

Jodi – I’m Jodi, a Master’s student in International Business and Modern Languages at the University of Strathclyde. Alongside my studies I’m excited about my role as a Unite Foundation Ambassador, helping to highlight the importance of stability and support for estranged and care experienced students navigating university.

Millicent – Hi! I’m Millicent, an environmental science graduate from the University of Stirling. I am advocating for estranged and care-experienced people to have a Home at University because I am passionate about supporting estranged and care-experienced students to access stable housing to prevent homelessness and to improve social mobility and to help more of us to access and graduate university.

Also on our Ambassador team are Ravinder and Luna

What #HomeAtUniversity means to me

As part of our work together the Unite Foundation Student Ambassadors reflected on why a home at university matters – they felt:

A home at university matters because it is a basic need and foundation wellbeing, learning and success. Without a safe, secure and stable place to live, students are focused on surviving, not thriving.

A home at university is needed to create community and a sense of belonging that allows students to fulfil their full potential in every area of their lives, not just academically.

A home at university is important because for many of us, this is it – this is all we have.

Work with our Student Ambassadors

We’re working with our Ambassadors to create meaningful opportunities for them to drive forward the work they’re passionate about. We’re pretty sure you’ll want to spend time with them, hearing them articulate their views on your conference stage or commissioning them to write a thought piece to create change in your organisation.

If that’s the case please complete this form to share more details about the opportunity. We will assess each opportunity on its merit and aim to come back to you within 5 working days of your enquiry.
